WORDS OF WISDOM
“You are allowed to move forward without pretending that what happened no longer matters.”
THE FREEDOM TO HEAL WITHOUT DENYING THE TRUTH.
We are often told that forgiveness is the path to peace.
That holding on to what happened keeps us connected to our pain.
That healing requires us to release resentment, let go of the past, and make room for a new beginning.
And for some people, forgiveness becomes a meaningful part of their lives.
But forgiveness is deeply personal.
It cannot be demanded, negotiated, or prescribed as a condition of someone's recovery.
There are experiences that change the way we understand ourselves, other people, and the world around us.
Some involve betrayal.
Others involve violations of trust, dignity, or fundamental expectations of fairness.
And sometimes the most difficult part of moving forward is not the pain itself, but the pressure to make peace with something that has never been properly acknowledged.
There is a difference between releasing ourselves from an experience and releasing others from responsibility for it.
“Peace does not require us to call injustice acceptable.”
We can rebuild without denying that something was wrong.
We can experience joy while continuing to believe that accountability matters.
We can choose not to pursue reconciliation while remaining committed to living with compassion and integrity.
Forgiveness, when freely chosen, may offer meaning.
But it is not the only expression of healing.
Sometimes healing looks like establishing a boundary.
Sometimes it means seeking appropriate remedies, recovering stability, or finding people who understand the importance of what we have experienced.
And sometimes it means allowing ourselves to participate in life again without having every unanswered question resolved.
Our future does not have to become a permanent argument with our past.
But neither must we erase the past to deserve a future.
We are allowed to remember.
We are allowed to seek justice.
And we are allowed to experience peace without making our healing dependent upon offering forgiveness.
Because freedom is not measured by how convincingly we can say that nothing matters anymore.
It is found in our growing ability to live according to what matters most.
A QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Have you been asking yourself to forgive something before giving yourself permission to fully acknowledge its impact?
