HEALING SHOULD NEVER COST YOU YOUR VOICE

WORDS OF WISDOM

“The purpose of guidance is not to make another person indispensable. It is to help you become more capable of choosing for yourself.”

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GUIDANCE AND CONTROL.

When we are searching for healing, we are often searching for answers.

We want to understand what happened.

Why we feel the way we do.

What may help us move toward greater stability, confidence, and peace.

In these moments, guidance can be deeply valuable.

A thoughtful practitioner, teacher, mentor, or advisor may introduce perspectives we have not considered and practices that support our wellbeing.

But there is an important difference between receiving support and surrendering our ability to question it.

Not every person who presents themselves as knowledgeable exercises their influence responsibly.

And not every practice that promises transformation respects the autonomy of the person seeking help.

Sometimes authority is established through certainty.

Through claims that only one method can produce meaningful change.

Through the suggestion that questioning the process demonstrates resistance, fear, or an unwillingness to heal.

These expectations deserve careful consideration.

“An ethical guide does not need you to become dependent in order to remain valuable.”

Meaningful support respects informed choice.

It acknowledges that different people may require different forms of assistance.

It recognizes the limits of professional knowledge and the importance of appropriate qualifications, transparent expectations, and responsible boundaries.

And it allows questions without treating disagreement as disloyalty.

This does not mean every difficult conversation is a sign of manipulation.

Growth can be uncomfortable.

Learning may challenge assumptions we have carried for years.

But discomfort alone does not establish that a method is effective, nor does confidence establish that an authority is trustworthy.

We should be able to examine the guidance we receive.

To ask what a practice is intended to accomplish.

To understand its limitations.

And to decide whether it aligns with our needs, values, and circumstances.

The relationship between a guide and the person seeking support should never require the abandonment of personal judgment.

Because healing is not about transferring ownership of our lives to someone who claims to know better.

It is about developing greater capacity to participate in our own lives with clarity, dignity, and choice.

A QUESTION TO CONSIDER

Does the guidance you receive strengthen your ability to make informed choices—or make you increasingly afraid to question the person providing it?
