YOU ARE ALLOWED TO WANT MORE THAN SURVIVAL

WORDS OF WISDOM

“Surviving is an act of courage. Wanting a life beyond survival is not ingratitude. It is hope finding its way home.”

WHEN POSSIBILITY BECOMES PART OF HEALING.

There are seasons when our greatest accomplishment is making it through the day.

When responsibilities feel overwhelming.

When uncertainty occupies more of our attention than possibility.

When simply maintaining what remains requires extraordinary effort.

During these periods, survival becomes the priority.

And there is dignity in doing what is necessary to continue.

But sometimes, even after circumstances begin to change, we remain hesitant to imagine a life beyond what we have endured.

We become so accustomed to managing what is difficult that wanting something beautiful can begin to feel unrealistic.

We question whether we are asking for too much.

Whether we should simply be grateful that things are no longer as they once were.

Whether hoping for more might expose us to disappointment again.

But gratitude and aspiration are not opposites.

We can appreciate what helped us survive while recognizing that survival was never meant to become the limit of our possibilities.

“You do not have to remain grateful for less simply because you once had nothing.”

There is a difference between recovering what was lost and beginning to create what has not yet existed.

Recovery may help us restore stability.

Reconstruction invites us to consider what kind of life we want that stability to support.

A life with greater freedom.

More meaningful relationships.

Work that reflects our values.

Space for creativity, joy, curiosity, and contribution.

These possibilities do not need to arrive all at once.

They may begin as quiet preferences we are finally willing to acknowledge.

Wanting something different does not invalidate the effort it took to survive.

Nor does it diminish the importance of the people, practices, or resources that helped us through difficult circumstances.

It simply recognizes that our lives are still unfolding.

We are allowed to have ambitions that are not defined by our pain.

Dreams that are not merely attempts to replace what disappeared.

And a future that is shaped by more than the circumstances we were forced to overcome.

Because rebuilding is not only about finding our way back to stability.

It is also about reclaiming our freedom to imagine what comes next.

A QUESTION TO CONSIDER

If survival were no longer the only priority, what would you give yourself permission to want?
